The Work as Play
Its often said that the real work that happens in therapy is done between sessions. It’s when the boots hit the ground that we begin to see if the concepts developed during a 55 minute appointment can be implemented in our personal lives and in relationship with others.
A guided fishing trip that occasionally breaks out into couples counseling with a licensed therapist offers the invitation to let these concepts breath. As co-anglers, Work together to solve a puzzle that has inspired not just some of the greatest American outdoor literature, but also generations of healing and connection.
Acceptance and Commitment therapy in particular invites us to be present in our environment, be mindful of our thoughts and emotions, and act in accordance with our values. There are few better pursuits than angling as a backdrop to this work.
While on the water we will take time to explore and develop a shared ethos around what it means to be in a relationship with one-another. We will identify values, explore patterns that perpetuate non-workable conflict, identify strategies for functional conflict and set goals and a shared vision for your lives together.
Your Guide
Born and raised in Waterbury Vermont, Maxwell earned his MSW at the University of Vermont with a concentration in ACT and Ecological Spirituality. He is a Husband and a Father living in the heart of the Green Mountains.
Maxwell’s work with couples applies ACT principles to clarify values, check assumptions, and practice conflict resolution skills. His clients are often looking to repair, improve or assess their relationship on the basis of romantic connection, parenting, the sharing of labor, and goal setting.
As an angler Maxwell is always looking for the next thing to get curious about. He is a fly tier and lure builder. You’re likely to find him laying in the moss taking pictures of brook trout or hauling his Boston Whaler down to the coast for the spring striped bass migration. His current hyper-fixation is to dial in on small-mouth bass in deep water with a fly rod.
